The Jordaan is easy to reach by foot from several locations in the city. Also on the route to the jordaan is enough to see, therefore if youre not in a hurry, going to walk is a good alternative.
The centre of Amsterdam exists in fact of three layers. As a first one is the old town centre with the dam and the red light district.
This is surrounded by the 'grachtengordel' and against that a number of districts have been built. The district on the West side of the 'grachtgordel' is the Jordaan. So if you want to go to the Jordaan from the centre, you allways go to the west, straight through the 'grachtengordel'.
From the Centraal Station
If you come from the centre side of Central Station, you go directly to the right. Walk straight on until the end of the station island. Here is pedestrians - and cyclist bridge heading to the center. Cross that bridge and go straight ahead under the viaduct of Prins Hendrikkade. This will lead you the singel. Cross the Singel via the bridge on your right. Go a few meters further on the Singel annd turn to the right to the Brouwersgracht. Take the brouwersgracht until the Prinsengracht. Then cross the Brouwersgracht via the bridge on your left and go directly to the right to cross the Prinsengracht. Now you are in the Jordaan. If you walk a little bit further on the Prinsengracht, you come at the Noordermarkt.
From the Dam
When you are facing the Dam with your back, you walk around the palace to en up at the back side of the building. If you are at te back of the palace, you are facing the Raaduisstraat. Follow the Raadhuisstraat, passing the Magna Plaza shopping center from the side. Go straight ahead, crossing the bridges of the grachtengordel. After the third bridge you will be at the Westermarkt with the Westertoren. Cross the Westermarkt and the bridge of the Prinsengracht. You have now arrived in the Jordaan. You can go straight on to the Rozengracht on (in the extension of the Raadhuisstraat) or to the left to the Prinsengracht in the direction of the Elandsgracht or to te right to the Prinsengracht in the direction of the Westerstraat.
From the Leidseplein
From the Leidseplein you go through the Leidse straat. Follow the street until the first bridge. Before the bridge you got to the left, and follow the Prinsengracht.
The first canal which you encounter on your left is the Leidse gracht. Cross that canal and go straight on at the Prinsengracht. The second canal which you encounter on your left is the Passeerdersgracht. Here the Jordaan starts, this is the most Southern part. If you go a bit further o the Prisengracht, you come at the Johnny Jordaanplein on the Elandsgracht. Here is the shoppig area starting and you can find the first bars. Therefore it is a good starting point for a walk through the Jordaan.
